Lions Of Howard High
Find the Stories that Connect Us
About The Inspiration
Throughout the year, AP World History students learn the historical development and the wealth of cultural diversity in our world. As a highly culturally-diverse school in Howard County, Howard High School is a microcosm of the world. World History reveals a rich tapestry of stories that weave and bind us in a community, highlighting the multiple ways and levels of connections we humans have with one another. It is our belief that Howard High community is also connected in such a way. Howard High, as the original high school in Howard County, carries a rich history. This project is dedicated to honoring that history, and showcasing the many ways in which our school community is connected to one another through OUR stories.

In the spirit of the Humans of New York stories, AP World History students interviewed many Howard High School community members and published OUR stories that connect us. The students first reflected the many ways in which they identified "who" they are; then they were tasked to find someone they do not know and connect over an aspect of their identities. But, it is the others' stories the students must tell. In their by-line, the students added how they connected with the other's story.
This project also reflects what Chimamanda Adichie discusses in her June 2009 TED Talk, The Danger of a Single Story. We need to connect, that connection makes our community not just more vibrant, but also binds us together. "Single stories" limit connectivity; they limit our perceptions of others, in turn reflecting a myopic view of not just others but also ourselves. Our tapestry, our stories, are colorful and multidimensional..
